George Orwell's Politics and the English Language introduced the five golden rules of writing beloved of journalism textbooks:

Andrew Marr revisited the text 50 years later in Words and things. Though its now 13 years old itself it still has a lot of relevant points about the use of language.

Fantastic bile

Highlights from 10 years of  Charlie Brooker's thoughts on Big Brother.

My fave parts:

Shahbaz is a children's party entertainer created in a madman's laboratory, set loose on the world minus an "off" switch. Shabaz - an episode of Crackerjack with an erection down its shorts, running, sobbing and shrieking, right in your direction. Shahbaz the Allfrighty. Fear him. Pity him. Just for God's sake don't encourage him.

Half the nation on tenterhooks, wondering whether Dimbo #1 would get to nudge his tinker up Dimbo #2's foo-foo before the cameras went away. Germaine Greer denouncing the ghastliness of it all in the Observer, while Dominic Mohan encouraged Sun readers to "grab a beer and pull up a seat" in the event of penetration. True obsessives could even sign up for text message updates of the latest developments. Middle of the night, and your mobile starts beeping: 3am LATEST: HE'S STUCK IT IN. Thank God for the 21st century.
